The typical timeline for a kitchen remodel in the Ithaca area ranges from a few weeks for a very minor remodel to six months or more for a full-scale overhaul.

Of course, these are general estimates, but they illustrate that the length of any specific kitchen remodel depends on the scope of the project. Custom remodeling almost always takes longer because of its focus on more extensive projects that require careful planning, tailored design features, and precise construction.

In this post, I’ll go over the main factors that influence a kitchen renovation timeline. I’ll also walk through the different stages involved in a kitchen remodel and the average time it takes for those stages to be completed. I’ll also offer practical tips to keep your kitchen remodel on schedule.

Factors That Affect Kitchen Remodel Timelines

The project’s scope and the availability of contractors and subcontractors are two of the most important factors influencing the timeline for a typical kitchen renovation.

Project Scope

The complexity of a kitchen remodeling project significantly impacts the overall timeline, with a cosmetic update being faster than a full gut renovation for the entire kitchen.

A full-scale remodel that involves structural changes, custom features, or kitchen layout changes can easily take three to six months and often longer. These projects require more planning and design work, more site prep, and more diverse types of labor, so it should be no surprise that they are more time-consuming.

Simpler kitchen remodels can be completed more quickly. For example, the most basic pull-and-replace project only involves replacing appliances. Although I question whether it’s accurate to apply the term “remodel” to this type of work, some simple projects of this kind can potentially be completed in as little as one week.

That said, on average, even a very simple kitchen renovation may take around one to two months. When you factor in time for planning, ordering materials and appliances, and doing the work, a small kitchen remodel typically still takes four to eight weeks.

Contractor and Subcontractor Availability

Remodeling work can only get done if the team you hire is actually available. Contractor scheduling can lead to delays if a contractor is managing multiple jobs or if subcontractors fall behind schedule.

Planning ahead can make a difference. Homeowners in the Ithaca area should anticipate the impact of seasonal contractor availability on their renovation timeline. Getting projects on the schedule early can often impact the finish date by several weeks or months.

Stages of a Complete Kitchen Remodel

For major projects like custom remodels, there are multiple stages that make up the full kitchen renovation timeline. These include contracting, design, permitting, construction, and inspection phases.

Contracting Phase

During this stage, you look for a remodeler to hire. For custom remodels, the best results usually come from working with a design-build firm that handles the entire project from start to finish.

In most cases, this phase takes a few weeks, but it can take longer if you decide to meet with a large number of remodelers or want more time to make a decision about who to work with.

Design Phase

The planning stage of a kitchen remodel typically takes anywhere from two to three months.

Having a clear vision for your dream kitchen helps streamline the planning process. This enables the designer to better understand the steps required to overhaul your existing kitchen.

In some cases, the design process can take longer, especially if you want to consider multiple layouts or material options. Ongoing design meetings let you and the designer refine the project plan and make sure that everything is fleshed out before construction starts.

While some homeowners may bristle at a longer design phase, the reality is that taking the time for proper planning actually saves time in the end. Rushing ahead can pave the way for unforeseen design and layout issues that complicate other steps of the remodeling process, requiring more time later in the project.

Permitting Phase

Understanding local regulations regarding permits is crucial for kitchen remodels. Permits and approvals are necessary for a remodel involving structural, electrical, or plumbing changes.

Securing the right permits can be stressful and may lead to delays, especially if you try to do this yourself. Thankfully, most remodelers will handle the permitting process for you, and, with their experience, can complete this phase efficiently and in a matter of weeks, often concurrently with other project preparation tasks.

Construction Phase

The construction phase involves multiple steps and often takes a couple of months to complete for a major renovation.

  • Acquiring materials: Availability of materials can influence how long a kitchen remodel takes. Getting the right materials may take longer for certain features, such as custom cabinetry for your new cabinets. Unfortunately, delays are somewhat common in renovations due to factors like shipping issues, material shortages, or other unexpected complications.
  • Demolition: The demolition stage typically takes one to two weeks to complete, depending on the extent of work required. During the demolition stage in older homes, workers may encounter unexpected issues like abnormal plumbing or wiring, which can add time to the schedule.
  • Structural Work: Structural changes, such as moving walls or windows, are completed during the structural work phase of a kitchen remodel. This requires careful planning and execution and can require specialized electrical and plumbing work as well.
  • Rough-In: Licensed plumbers and electricians install new pipes and wiring during the utility rough-in phase, which requires inspections before it can be finished . The rough-in stage usually takes about one to two weeks to complete, and the inspection during rough-in typically takes between one and two days.

Inspection Phase

Final inspections ensure the completed work meets local regulations and may require scheduling with local authorities, such as the city of Ithaca’s building department. Depending on the inspection, additional work may be required to comply with local building codes. In most cases, final inspections and finishing up loose ends usually take about one to two weeks.

Tips for Staying On Schedule

Choosing the right remodeler, optimizing the design phase, and making smart contingency plans can help you keep your kitchen remodel on schedule.

  • Choose your remodeler wisely: Hiring an experienced contractor can help streamline the kitchen remodel process and keep it on schedule. A top-tier contractor’s time estimates are more likely to be accurate. A high-quality remodeler or general contractor can coordinate schedules among multiple subcontractors, and their communication with contractors is crucial to tackle problems as they arise.
  • Optimize the design phase: It’s worth investing your time and attention in the design phase because it can save you time later. For example, material selection should be done early to account for manufacturing and shipping lead times, especially for custom cabinets and specialty items. Because the complexity of the remodel affects the overall timeline, getting the planning right can go a long way to finishing the project on time.
  • Making plans and contingency plans: Think ahead about logistics, including setting up a temporary kitchen during the renovation process, as the kitchen will be unusable during demolition and construction. In addition, be prepared for a few curveballs — having contingency plans is essential for addressing unexpected issues swiftly.
