More and more, homeowners are seeking a take in some an outdoor living space where they can spend time and take in some fresh air. Whether it’s a place for quiet relaxation, entertaining and welcoming guests, or simply being with family, an outdoor space can be a major home upgrade.
There are many types of attached outdoor spaces, the most common being patios, decks, porches, and multi-season rooms. While a patio may be just concrete or tile, the other options involve a more significant structure. These are most often built in the backyard space, but they can also fit in a side yard or, in some cases, at the front of your home near the entrance.
Each type of outdoor space offers distinct features. In this post, I’ll take a closer look at decks, porches, and multi-season rooms, explaining what they offer and how you can decide which is best for your home.
The Three Levels of Outdoor Living Spaces

There are several types of outdoor or backyard structures that can be a significant step up from a concrete patio. Although these options have a lot in common (including direct access to the interior of the house), we can separate them into three levels.
- Level 1 (Decks): Decks are an elevated but uncovered platform usually made of pressure-treated wood or composite materials.
- Level 2 (Porches): Porches are covered structures that offer a protected outdoor living space. Porches can be screened-in or open.
- Level 3 (Multi-season rooms): Multi-season rooms are enclosed with windows or sliding doors and include at least a basic heating and cooling system. They may also be called three-season or four-season rooms or sunrooms.
What’s the Difference Between a Deck and Porch?

Colloquially, people sometimes use the words interchangeably, so it’s natural to wonder: how can you really tell if something is a deck or a porch?
In the end, there are a few key differences between a deck and a porch. A deck is an open structure, which means it is exposed to the weather. While you can put up an umbrella, the deck structure itself doesn’t offer protection from rain and wind. In fact, it may require regular maintenance so that it can hold up given its exposure to these elements.
In contrast, a porch is covered, which means it helps defend your space from outdoor elements. A screened-in porch offers further protection, especially from bugs.
Porches are typically built into the structure of your home, while decks are independent but attached. Decks are often built as decks, and porches are common in backyards, but porches are also frequently built on the front of a house, offering a covered spot for your front entrance. Because it is visible next to the front door, a front porch can also meaningfully increase your home’s curb appeal. Offering a platform that’s above the ground, which makes them well-suited to properties on an uneven grade.

Three-Season and Four-Season Rooms

A three-season or four-season sunroom feels like an extra living room, offering more privacy and protection from the elements than a deck or porch. Multi-season rooms are becoming more popular among homeowners because they can be used for relaxing, dining, and entertaining even when the weather outside isn’t cooperating. As a covered structure, there’s built-in protection from rain. But large windows or sliding doors offer a defense against wind and bugs while still letting in the sun’s rays. That allows you to enjoy natural light even on cool days. These sunrooms either have an independent heating and cooling system or are linked to the house’s HVAC system. As a result, you can keep them at a comfortable temperature during most or all of the year.
How to Decide Between a Deck, Porch, or Multi-Season Room
Technically, you don’t have to choose. It is possible to have two structures, such as a multi-season room that opens onto a deck or a screened-in porch on the front of your house, along with a deck off the back door. Nevertheless, most homeowners find themselves choosing between these options, so I’ll go through some of the factors that can influence which is best for your home.
How Much Protection Do You Want from Outdoor Elements?
A multi-season room, which has a roof, windows, and a heating and cooling system, offers the most protection from nasty weather and bugs. You’ll rarely run into situations when you can’t use a multi-season room, making these indoor-outdoor spaces the most versatile option.
If you don’t care about the potential for rain, wind, or bugs, a deck can be the perfect fit. It may not be of much use in bad weather, but it can be a great joy on nice days.
If you want something in between, a screened-in porch is a solid choice. Its roof provides shade and keeps you safe from rain, while the screens keep bugs away. It may be too chilly to use on cold days, but you’ll be able to enjoy your porch during much of the year.
How Do You Plan to Use Your Outdoor Area?

Think about when and how you want to use your outdoor living space, as this may give you insights into whether you prefer a porch, deck, or multi-season room.
If you want something that feels like a living room where you can throw open the windows for a taste of outdoor living, a multi-season room is ideal. It also works well if you want a multi-purpose area that you can take advantage of regardless of the weather.
If you’re mainly thinking about hosting parties in the summer, a deck is likely to meet your needs. Although it doesn’t have a covered area and thus lacks versatility, a deck can offer more space for you and your family to enjoy during the nicer parts of the year.
If you want to be able to get fresh air and want some extra shade or protection from rain, a porch is a great choice.
You can also think about combining different options, such as building a deck that is partially covered. This can be an ideal place to put an outdoor kitchen so that you can fire up your grill or outdoor pizza oven on a rainy day without getting soaked.
What’s Your Budget?
In most cases, a deck costs less to build than a porch. Both of these options typically cost considerably less than a multi-season room since the materials and labor costs are higher with a multi-season sunroom.
That said, a deck can have more ongoing maintenance costs since it is exposed to the elements. When thinking about your budget, make sure to also account for any special outdoor furniture or other elements you will want to add to your house’s new outdoor living area.
As with any remodel, choosing a more complex design and higher-end materials will increase the project budget, but it also comes with more durability and performance and a bigger impact on your home’s value.
