I love subway tile. In my mind, these tiles are classic for a reason. They offer a timeless style that can complement a range of different spaces and decors. Whether used as a backsplash in the kitchen, a tub surround in the bathroom, or for other projects around the house, it’s hard to go wrong with these classics.

Of course, even when using such a traditional option, don’t overlook the chance to add a bit of your own creativity. By exploring all the design possibilities, you can craft a unique look that reflects your personal style. There are many different ways to achieve this when applying these tiles to your walls, and I’ll touch on some of the best ideas below.

#1 – Play with Tile Orientation

When you picture a typical installation, you probably see in your mind the same thing that I do: rows of horizontal tiles that are staggered with either a 1/2 or 1/3 offset. That’s a beautiful arrangement, and it might prove to be exactly what you want for your project. But that’s not the only way that these tiles can be applied to walls. It’s also possible to use them vertically, either staggered or stacked, or you could create a pattern like herringbone or basketweave.

#2 – Go with a Different Size

Subway tiles, being rectangular tiles, come in multiple sizes, so you certainly don’t have to be stuck with the standard 3” x 6” format. Those standard tiles are great, but if your space is suited to something larger or smaller, don’t hesitate to make the change, and you might see your design come to life as a result.

Designer’s Tip: Larger format tiles reduce the number of grout lines, so they can make tub surrounds and bathroom floors easier to clean.

#3 – Explore the Various Finishes

In addition to sizing, you can also play with the finishes that you select for your subway tile installation to fit seamlessly into various design styles. A glossy finish will look right at home in some situations, while it may look out of place in others. Matte subway tiles, along with those that offer a hand-glazed look, are just a couple of the varieties on the market worth exploring.

Designer’s Tip: Hand-glazed tiles are prized for their distinctive, organic look. They are, however, quite expensive. To keep costs under control, add them as accents to your bathroom or kitchen, using regular field tile for the bulk of the room. You get the artisanal look at a fraction of the cost of going 100% hand-glazed.

#4 – Add More Tile!

Sometimes, the best way to vary the typical look of a subway tile installation is simply to add more tile. I love working on projects where we can explore the available space to add additional subway tile and stretch out the design either horizontally or vertically. While we always go up to the ceiling with subway tile in the shower, we can do something similar in a kitchen by going up and around a large hood or using other available space to add size to the project. Using a contrasting grout color can create a focal point and add depth to the design.

#5 – Pick the Right White

Even within this category, selecting subway tile thoughtfully is crucial as there is wide variation between manufacturers when it comes to the precise shade of white that they offer. By working closely with a designer and shopping around for the perfect tile, you can track down a shade that you love and that works with the other colored elements in the design.

Exploring Different Types of White Subway Tiles

White subway tiles are a timeless and versatile design choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and beyond. They offer a blend of classic beauty and adaptability, making them a popular choice for both modern and traditional spaces. When it comes to selecting white subway tiles, there are several types to consider:

  • Ceramic: Known for their durability and ease of maintenance, ceramic tiles are a staple in many homes. Available in a range of finishes, including glossy, matte, and textured, these tiles can fit seamlessly into any design style. Their resilience makes them perfect for high-traffic areas like kitchen backsplashes and bathroom walls.
  • Porcelain: Porcelain tiles are celebrated for their strength and low water absorption, making them ideal for areas prone to moisture, such as shower walls and bathroom floors. These tiles come in various finishes, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits.
  • Glass: For a sleek, modern look, glass subway tiles are an excellent choice. Their reflective surface can make a space feel larger and brighter. Available in glossy, matte, and frosted finishes, glass tiles add a contemporary touch to any room.
  • Natural Stone: If you’re aiming for timeless appeal, natural stone tiles like marble, limestone, and travertine are unmatched. Each piece of natural stone is unique, adding a touch of luxury and elegance to your design. These tiles are perfect for creating a sophisticated look in any space.

Bathroom Walls and Beyond

White subway tiles are a popular choice for bathroom walls, kitchen backsplashes, and shower walls. They offer a clean and elegant look that can enhance the aesthetic and functionality of any space. When designing with white subway tiles, consider the following tips:

  • Classic Kitchen Backsplash: Use white subway tiles to create a classic backsplash in your kitchen. Their clean lines and glossy finishes can make your kitchen feel both timeless and modern.
  • Elegant Bathroom Walls: Add a clean and elegant look to your bathroom walls with white subway tiles. Their classic shape and versatility make them a perfect choice for creating a serene and stylish bathroom.
  • Stylish Fireplace Surround: Extend the use of white subway tiles beyond the kitchen and bathroom by creating a stylish fireplace surround. The tiles’ timeless appeal can add a touch of sophistication to your living space.
  • Creative Patterns: Lay white subway tiles in different patterns, such as herringbone or vertical stacks, for added visual interest. These patterns can transform a simple design into a stunning focal point.
  • Contrasting Grout Colors: Consider using contrasting grout colors to create a focal point in your design. Dark grout lines can add depth and dimension, while bright shades can make a bold statement.

Tips for Installing Subway Tiles

Installing subway tiles can be a DIY project, but it requires attention to detail and proper technique, and if you have never attempted to install tile, you should probably hire a professional. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Use a Level and Spacers: Ensure an even surface and consistent grout lines by using a level and spacers between tiles. This step is crucial for achieving a professional finish.
  • Apply Adhesive Properly: Before installing the tiles, apply a layer of adhesive to the wall or floor. Use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive evenly, ensuring a strong bond.
  • Press Tiles Firmly: Press the tiles firmly into place, making sure to align them properly. This will help prevent any unevenness and ensure a smooth surface.
  • Grout Application: Use a grout float to spread the grout evenly between the tiles. Wipe away excess grout with a damp cloth to keep the tiles clean and the grout lines neat.
  • Seal Grout Lines: To protect the grout lines from stains and water damage, seal them after the grout has cured. This step is essential for maintaining the longevity and appearance of your tile installation.

By following these tips, you can achieve a beautiful and durable subway tile installation, whether you’re working on a kitchen backsplash, bathroom walls, or any other space in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean and maintain subway tile?

Regularly wipe down the tiles with a damp cloth to prevent dirt buildup. For a deeper clean, use a mild detergent solution or, for hard water stains, a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water. Apply the chosen solution with a soft cloth, then rinse thoroughly. For grout maintenance, use a baking soda paste or a specialized grout cleaner (Scrubbing Bubbles seems to work well).

Are white subway tiles cheaper than other options?

White subway tiles are generally more affordable than many other tiling options due to their mass production and standardization, which significantly lower manufacturing costs. Their popularity ensures they are widely available, further reducing costs.

What grout colors are best with white subway tile?

White grout offers a more seamless appearance, but with white subway tiles, you’re already working with a blank canvas, so to speak. For that reason, I lean heavily on dark grey grout. It adds some nice contrast, and it more effectively conceals dirt and stains. If you want to be really bold, try a contrasting grout color in a bright shade to create a focal point in your design. Additionally, remember to apply a sealant when using contrasting grout to prevent any dye from seeping into the tile’s hairline cracks.

What different finishes are available on white subway tiles?

The traditional finish is gloss white, which is easy to clean and always attractive. Matte finishes offer a softer, more contemporary look. There are also textured finishes, which add depth and tactile interest, ideal for creating a more dynamic surface. Additionally, some tiles feature a crackle glaze, giving them a vintage or artisanal appearance that can add character and charm to any setting.

What are the dimensions of standard white subway tiles?

The standard dimensions for white subway tiles are 3 inches by 6 inches (3″x6″). This classic size has been widely used since subway tiles were first introduced in the early 20th century. However, as the popularity of subway tiles has grown, so has the variety of sizes available. You can now find subway tiles in larger formats such as 4 inches by 8 inches, 4 inches by 12 inches, and even 2 inches by 4 inches for those preferring a smaller scale.
