Embarking on a kitchen renovation is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. While some homeowners have a complete vision of every detail down to the dishes, most need to examine the possibilities before they can start any meaningful planning.

If you know your kitchen needs a renovation but are looking for inspiration, this post shares some kitchen ideas from our portfolio that can spark further thinking about the designs and materials that can make your kitchen more functional and stylish.

The Open Kitchen Layout for Enhanced Mobility

If you have a relatively large space to work with, there’s a tendency to want to completely fill the space. But you also have the option of keeping your kitchen more open, enhancing mobility and cultivating an airy and welcoming feel through savvy design choices.

In this kitchen, we preserved ample floor space in the center of the room. The “work triangle” connects the three main work areas: the sink, the stove, and the refrigerator. As a general rule, the distance between the sink, stove, and fridge should be no less than 4 feet and no larger than 9 feet. Here, we erred toward more space to provide more mobility through the kitchen, a helpful feature for homeowners hoping to age in place.

The open feel is enhanced by bright colors that reflect light. These colors and tones are found in the white cabinets, the painted backsplash, and the complementary large-format tile flooring.

We especially love the backsplash, which matches the paint on the kitchen walls. Unique backsplashes can serve as a stunning focal point in kitchen design, but they don’t have to involve fancy tilework. Just adding color to your kitchen can reflect your personality; in this home, you can immediately feel the upbeat vibe from the color palette.

The Kitchen Hub

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, and one of the most impactful home renovations is turning your kitchen into a hub that unites other spaces on your main floor, including a family room, living room, and dining area.

For this Cayuga Heights remodel, our client wanted the kitchen to connect with the surrounding rooms while also providing plenty of storage and counter space, including countertops that facilitate prepping, entertaining, and serving.

The kitchen has an open-concept design and is linked directly to an entryway and mudroom, as well as a dining room and adjacent living space. Between the kitchen and dining area is a peninsula that is perfectly positioned for appetizers or a self-serve buffet.

For extra work space, there’s a compact kitchen island right in the center. A single pendant light provides task lighting for the island to supplement the recessed lights in the ceiling. Throughout the space, natural wood and stone elements add warmth and texture to the kitchen.

High-Contrast Minimalism

For this remodel in East Hill, we leaned into the concept of high-contrast minimalism. While that might sound like an oxymoron, it actually serves as a compelling concept for kitchen design.

On one hand, this kitchen has a minimalist aesthetic with clean lines and a bright, straightforward color palette. But at the same time, it creates visual appeal through contrast, such as the stainless steel appliances, custom cabinetry (with Shaker-style cabinets), natural hardwood floors, and ceramic decor behind the stove.

Although this kitchen space isn’t huge, it doesn’t feel cramped thanks to the light colors, which can make a small kitchen feel larger and more open. There are also no lower cabinets near the door to the dining room, giving more clearance for moving through the kitchen. For homeowners who want more storage with this type of layout, floating shelves are a viable option, offering open shelving either for decorations or for keeping regularly used items within easy reach.

The Expanded Kitchen Island

Big kitchen islands are a popular feature in kitchen remodels, and we seized on that concept for this project in southwest Ithaca.

To maximize your space, you can include cabinets in your island, purchase spice racks, install hanging pot racks, insert pullout storage, and invest in a cart. In this design, we included some of those storage solutions while also adding seating and a built-in sink. That allows the island to be used for meal prep, dining, cleanup, and storage. A bank of pendant lights with a unique fixture adds visual appeal to the overall design.

Unique Finishing Touches for Cabinets and Other Kitchen Storage

Most people focus primarily on the functional benefit of adding more kitchen storage. But you shouldn’t overlook the little aesthetic details that go into your drawers and cabinet doors. Incorporating personal style into kitchen design is essential for creating a space you love.

For this remodel, we used unique handles and drawer pulls made of textured steel. In this home, you get a reminder of this customized design choice every time you open a drawer or cabinet.

We realize that this exact hardware may not suit everyone, but it gives you an idea of how you can tailor the details of your kitchen to your individual preferences.

Optimizing Natural Light

A galley layout is a great kitchen remodeling option for tight spaces or smaller kitchen footprints, and you can enhance that layout even more with natural light.

In this open-concept main floor, the entire space is brightened by light that streams in through the large glass doors and windows. The natural light complements the natural wood to give the space a feel that is simultaneously rustic and modern.
